BREAST CANCER CLAIMANTS GET CHEQUES THIS WEEK
Compensation cheques were mailed out last Friday to 403 class members, according to Ches Crosbie, lawyer for the class action. These were mailed from Waterloo, Ontario, "and should arrive today or tomorrow."
Mr. Crosbie said that "the good news is that the target compensation amounts will be exceeded by a very significant amount." Claimants will receive more than the settlement amounts aimed for.
The target settlement amounts were $75,000, $15,000, $10,000, $5,000 and $1,000, according to severity of injury.
Mr. Crosbie said he did not want to disclose the exact amounts now being paid, due to privacy concerns. "But the recipients should be very pleased", he stated.
Mr. Crosbie disclosed that in the highest category for compensation, Category 1, 60 out of a possible 75 claims had been approved and were being paid. "All in all, this class action has given pretty good access to justice", he said. An additional 30 claims have been received but are still under consideration.
