Actions against the Attorney General of Canada have been filed in two purported class actions on behalf of aborginal groups in Labrador. Members of these two classes were left out of the recent global residential school settlements. The history of residential schools in Canada and in Labrador is set out in the Statements of Claim as well as the allegations of wrongdoing against Canada.
The action has been brought by Koskie Minsky of Toronto as lead counsel, and Ches Crosbie Barristers is acting as Newfoundland and Labrador counsel.
A case conference was held with the case management judge in January 2008, and further action needed to progress these claims toward a certification hearing date will be known by the end of February 2008.
