Residential Schools Claims in Newfoundland and Labrador
Yes, there are such claims in this province, and yes, these claims represent the biggest class action settlement in Canadian history, and yes, Canada has excluded Newfoundland and Labrador aboriginal people from participating in the national settlement.
That is why we brought suit on behalf of those who attended five different schools in Labrador, set up by the Grenfell Mission and the Moravians, but for which we say Canada was responsible from the date of Confederation in 1949.
Newfoundland and Labrador residential school victims deserve a settlement. They suffered sexual and physical abuse - and "cultural genocide" - as did aboriginal people elsewhere in this country. So thought the Supreme Court, Trial Division, in a decision that granted class action status. Canada has appealed
Firms represented by Kirk Baert, Stephen Cooper, and Ches Crosbie argued the appeal of the class action last week - justice for native peoples in Newfoundland and Labrador. I'll keep you posted.
