Liberal MHA Rex Hillier stood in the House of Assembly in the last week of May to present a petition asking government to raise the level of policing in Conception Bay South “with an objective of improving public safety for residents”.
No responsible person could argue against the worthy goal of roadway public safety. The question is how to employ the resources of government and community groups to best attain that end.
The petition says CBS has a population of 26,000 people. The community has a general speed limit of only 40 kph, but residents are said to be concerned about high speed and inadequate traffic control.
Mr. Hillier obviously believes that the visibility of police in CBS is an important ingredient of maintaining highway safety.
There are many ways to improve roadway safety and lower the accident rate in growing communities such as CBS, and improved police visibility may well be one of them. But as we noted in a recent blog, advances in motor vehicle and traffic system technology which reduce the element of human error may be introducing a significant advance in safety – despite us humans.
